GEOFFREY WATSON SUTHERLAND was born on 7th December, 1893, at Kyneton, Victoria, the son of Mr. Thomas Watson Sutherland and Mrs. Alice Boyett Sutherland. He received his education at the State School, Kyneton, and Kyneton College, and joined the service of the Bank at Kyneton on 21st November, 1911. From there he was transferred to Bendigo on 21st August, 1913; thence to Inglewood (Victoria) on 3rd December, 1913, from which branch he went to Echuca, as ledger-keeper, on 28th August, 1914.
Geoffrey Watson Sutherland enlisted as a trooper in the A.I.F. on 28th December, 1915, and subsequently joined up with the A Squadron, 8th Light Horse, in Egypt, where he served with his regiment, also in Sinai and Palestine until June, 1919. He was promoted to corporal in December, 1917, and to sergeant in the following June. At El Burg, Palestine, he was wounded in December, 1917, rejoining his regiment after some months in hospital. He returned to Australia in November, 1919.
