Jack Grebet Steber was born on 19th December, 1894, at Manly, near Sydney, the son of Mr. Adolphe Grebet Steber and Mrs. Rose Grebet Steber. He was educated at the Sydney Grammar School, and entered the Bank’s service at Haymarket Branch on 31 st October, 1911; being transferred to North Sydney on 20th August, 1912; and to Ashfield on 13th February, 1914.

Jack Grebet Steber enlisted in August, 1914, and was appointed corporal. He embarked with his company for Egypt and was sent to Gallipoli, where he was present at the Landing, and whilst on the Peninsula he received slight wounds. While there he attained the rank of sergeant.

He was invalided to Australia after an attack of enteric fever. On his recovery he went to Duntroon College and gained his commission, and again proceeded to France, taking part in several of the big engagements. He was mentioned in despatches in Military Order, No. 570, of 1915:—

“153. Complimentary. The Army Corps Commander has very much pleasure in publishing the names of the junior regimental officers, warrant officers, N.C.O.’s and men in the attached supplement, which have been brought to his notice for having performed various acts of conspicuous gallantry or valuable service during the period from 25th April to 5th May, 1915. He cordially thanks them for the good work they have performed, which more than ever testifies to their devotion to duty towards King and Country. His only regret is that they cannot all be rewarded.
