BUTLER COLE SMYTH was born at Warragul, Victoria, on 25th February, 1894, the son of Mr. C. N. Smyth and Mrs. Roberta Mary Smyth. He was educated at King’s College, Warragul, and joined the service of the Bank on 12th October, 1910, at Melbourne.

Butler Cole Smyth enlisted on 4th February, 1915, as a member of the A.I.F., being allotted to the 23rd Battalion, 6th Brigade. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and France, and took part in the Battles of Lone Pine, Pozieres, Ypres, Mouquet Farm and Bapaume, and won promotion to sergeant. On 3rd May, 1917, he was wounded at Bullecourt.
