Thomas Smith was born on 15 October 1789 at Sydney, the son of Patrick Burn and Ann Smith. He was baptised (as Thomas Burn) on 22 November 1789 at St Philip's Church, Sydney. He was sent with his mother and half-sister Ann to Norfolk Island on the Sirius in March 1790. They returned to Port Jackson in March 1793 on the Kitty.
Smith married Leticia Allcock on 14 June 1820 at St Johns Parramatta. He died on 22 November 1834 at Prospect.
