HUBERT GEORGE SMITH was born on 31st October, 1896, at Hamilton, Newcastle, New South Wales, the son of Mr. William Samuel and Mrs. Elizabeth Gertrude Smith. He was educated at St. Peter’s College, Adelaide, South Australia, and joined the Bank’s service on 1st July, 1913, at Bathurst. On 22nd March, 1915, he was transferred to Head Office, and on 1st May, 1915, to Annandale.
Hubert George Smith enlisted as a member of the A.I.F. on 31st August, 1915, and later joined up with the 12th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery, to which he was attached. On 1st August, 1916, he won promotion to the rank of corporal; on 1st December, 1916, to sergeant instructor at the 1st Anzac Corps School of Instruction, Corbie, France. He was wounded at Messines on 7th June, 1917, and returned to Australia on 3rd February, 1918.
