
HERBERT HANNELL SMITH was born on 9th December, 1889, at Bathurst, New South Wales, the son of Mr. William Burton Smith and Mrs. Edith Smith. He was educated at the Petersham and Dubbo Public Schools, and entered the Bank’s service at Dubbo on 6th May, 1908; he was transferred to Braidwood on 2nd August, 1909; to Bungendore, as assistant, on 9th February, 1911 ; to Orange, as ledger-keeper, on 29th January, 1912; to Coonabarabran, as teller, on11 th November, 1914; and to Narrabri on 31st July, 1915.
Herbert Hannell Smith enlisted as a member of the A.I.F. on 13th September, 1915, and was allotted to the 5th A.S.C. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of extra regimental sergeant.
