WILLIAM HENRY SHIELDS, son of Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Elizabeth Shields, was born at Myrtleford, Victoria, on 17th February, 1896, and received his education at Cootamundra, New South Wales. He entered the service of the Bank at Young on 19th December, 1913, and was transferred to Narrandera on 26th August, 1914.
William Shields enlisted at Narrandera as a member of the A.I.F. in September, 1915, embarking on 20th January, 1916, for Egypt where he saw active service. He arrived in France on 8th April, 1916, and on 26th July following he was wounded. In April, 1917, he was promoted to the rank of corporal; to sergeant in February, 1918; staff sergeant in January, 1919; and to warrant officer in the following May. He returned to Australia in April, 1920.
