John Phillip Potticary (1892–1937)

Mr. John Phillip Potticary, who died in Pirie Hospital in the early hours of Monday morning, was 45 years of age. He was a railways employee who had earned the deep respect of his workmates and Pirie citizens generally. He came to Pirie on transfer 10 years ago this month, and had been engaged as an oiler in the loco sheds.

Mr. Potticary was born at Port Wakefield, and was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. John Potticary, a well-known farming family in that district.

Twenty years ago he secured employment with the Railways Department and he spent half that time at Wakefield yards. He was married at Port Wakefield to Miss Mary Elizabeth Rowe, and was a model husband and father to his five young children.

Mr. Potticary was a home lover, and took no part in public affairs. He was rarely seen out without one or two of his sons, to whom he was deeply attached.

He was a member of the Australian Government Workers' Association, and was a true unionist, of moderate views. Mr. T. F. O'Brien (secretary of the association) yesterday paid a warm tribute to his worth as a work mate and citizen. Gardening was his hobby, and he spent much time among his flowers at the home in Cottell street.

Mrs. Potticary survives. The five children are Ross, Gwen, Keith, Tom, and Victor.

The remains were interred yesterday in Pirie Cemetery. Father M. Coffey conducted the service, and those who bore the coffin were Messrs. J. F. O'Brien. F. T. Flinn, R. C. Milburn, H. Field, R. S. Orchard, and E. A. Hamdorf.
