Owen Bismark Paice (1882-1959) miner, engine-driver, and trade union official

Birth: 18 August 1882 at Tea Tree, Tasmania, son of Tasmanian-born parents William Paice (1848-1931), farmer, and Mary Jane, née Moore (1846-1896). Marriage: 2 November 1904 at St Cuthbert’s Church, Gormanston, Tasmania, to Ann Williams (1884-1963), born in Wales, United Kingdom. They had one daughter and one son. Death: 25 August 1959 at Lyell District Hospital, Queenstown, Tasmania, usual residence Conlan Street, Tea Tree. 

  • Worked for Mt Lyell Company.
  • Member of Federated Engine Drivers’ and Firemen’s Association of Australasia. Foundation member of the FED&FA, Queenstown sub-branch; was a FED&FA member for about fifty years and secretary for some forty years. Active in formation of Combined Unions Council, of which he was secretary until 1934.
  • Committee member of the Queenstown branch of the Workers’ Educational Association.
  • Was honoured with life memberbership of the FED&FA, of Queenstown Trades and Labour Council and of the local branch of the Australian Labor Party.
  • Retired shortly before his death. Was predeceased by his son.
  • Cause of death: pneumonia.
