Norman Francis (Norm) Nolan (1917-1968) ironworker and trade union official 

Birth: 1 October 1917 at Wickham, Newcastle, New South Wales, son of native-born parents Patrick Francis Nolan (1886-1939), timber foreman, and Bernetta (Mary), née Kelly (1890-1968). Marriage: 1943 at Merewether, Newcastle, to Marie Spruce (1922-2003), born at Merewether. They had one daughter and two sons. Death: 7 November 1968 at Fitzroy Road, Lambton, Newcastle. Religion: Catholic. 

  • Worked as an ironworker at John Lysaght's and Electric Lamp Manufacturers of Australia.
  • Joined the Federated Ironworkers’ Association (FIA) at 17 years of age. Associated with union for about 34 years. Elected Newcastle branch president FIA in 1949; organiser 1952; secretary of Newcastle branch until death. Member of the national council from 1950 to death.
  • Member Lambton branch of the Australian Labor Party.
  • Keen sportsman. Played reserve grade rugby and first grade cricket being a captain and coach.
  • Cause of death: coronary thrombosis (½ hour), coronary atherosclerosis (6 years) , previous coronary thrombosis (6 years).
