Robert John Morgan emigrated to Australia in about 1832 with his mother after his father's death. His mother Elizabeth Morgan remarried James Dobson in Sydney in 1834. Robert married his step-sister Margaret Dobson in 1838 at Newcastle, moving to Victoria in 1843. The couple eventually settled on "Cherry Tree", the property next to Jane Lucas's family. Robert and Margaret had eight children, six of whom survived infancy. Margaret died in 1850 in Gippsland five weeks after the birth of her eight child.
Following the sale of Cherry Tree in 1856, Robert owned a general store in Alberton for several years before moving to the Cape Liptrap Run. In 1864, the family moved to the Bairnsdale area and to Cann River in 1880. Robert died on 18th January 1900; Jane died four days later.
