Mary Jane Pickett was baptised as Mary Picket on 26 May 1799 at St Philips, Sydney. She married John Merrill on 31 May 1813 at St Matthews, Windsor. By 1818 they were separated with John Murrell placing an advertisement in the Sydney Gazette stating that his wife had left the family home and he would not be responsible for her debts. Mary moved to Hobart that same year. She died at Hobart on 20 April 1819, aged 21. Her death was registered under the name Mary Merrell.
