John (Jack) Melrose (1887–1918)

Corporal John (Jack) Melrose (1887-1918), plate layer, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 15 May 1916, served with the 54th Battalion in France and was awarded the Military Medal on 2 July 1917 for bravery in the field. He died in hospital at Rouen on 24 April 1918 of wounds (gas) received in action on the Somme on 17 April 1918. He was buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension (Block P, Plot IX, Row D, Grave No. IB), Rouen, France.
