STANLEY McLENNAN was born at Bibbenluke, New South Wales, on 25th June, 1895, the son of Mr. William and Mrs. Jane McLennan. He was educated a t the Bibbenluke Public School, and afterwards at Messrs. Stott and Hoare’s Business College. He passed the Bankers’ Institute examination and entered the service of the Bank of New South Wales on 19th November, 1912, at the Haymarket Branch, Sydney. On 25th March, 1913, he was transferred to Cooma.
While at Cooma, late in 1914, or early in 1915, he enlisted in the A.I.F., and sailed from Australia for Egypt in March, 1915, as No. 1784 of the 13th Battalion. With that unit he took part in the campaign on Gallipoli, and was wounded in the engagement at Lone Pine. After the evacuation he went on to France and was promoted to corporal on 1st August, 1916. He was again wounded at Mouquet Farm in the same month.
At Ploegsteert, near Messines, on 10th July, 1917, an enemy shell caused an explosion in a supply of bombs near which Stanley McLennan was on duty and he was killed instantly. His superior officer wrote in high commendation of his bravery and utter disregard for self.
