Edward Clarence (Ted) McBeatty, (1923-1983) carter and trade union official

Birth: 1923 at Redfern, Sydney, New South Wales, son of native-born parents Robert James McBeatty (1884-1961), carrier, and Elsie May, née Garner (1885-1969). Unmarried. Death: 28 December 1983 in a boating accident on the Hawkesbury river near Lower Portland, NSW; usual residence Harris Street, Mascot. Religion: Catholic. 

  • Worked as a carter in Sydney. Was organiser of the Transport Workers' Union (TWU), NSW branch, from the 1950s.
  • Assumed secretary-treasurership of the branch on retirement of Ernie Wilmot in 1968.
  • Under his leadership NSW branch of the TWU remained committed to arbitration and solidly aligned with the right-wing of the Australian Labor Party.
  • Was accidentally drowned when the boat he was rowing capsized and he fell into the water.
