Edward Matthews (1864-1968) sheetmetal worker and trade union official

Birth: 4 April 1864 at Pattingham, Staffordshire, England, son of George William Matthews (1827-1899), coach wheeler, and Elizabeth, née Allen (1831-1917) Marriage: 25 May 1896 at St Mark’s Anglican Church, Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria, to Eliza Alice Hunt (1870-1949). They had two daughters and nine sons. Death: 28 November 1968 at Box Hill, Melbourne; usual residence at Mitcham Road, Vermont. 

  • Was working as an iron-plate worker at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, in 1881.
  • Arrived in Brisbane in 1889. Pioneer and secretary of the Victorian Sheet Metal Workers’ Union. Delegate to union conferences.
  • Appointed member of the Wages Board for tinsmiths 1900, ovenmakers 1904 and agricultural Implements 1906.
  • Keen football follower.
  • Cause of death: uraemia (5 days) and senility.
