James Manning was a private marine in the 56th (Portsmouth) Company. He arrived in Sydney in 1788 aboard the Prince of Wales as part of the First Fleet. He was attached to Watkin Tench's company at Port Jackson. He married Isabella Ramsay in 1792 and enlisted in the NSW Corps the following year. By 1800 Isabella was living with Robert Forrester. On 24 April 1810 Manning was transferred to the 73rd Regiment and went with them to Ceylon (Sri Lanka). He was invalided home in March 1815. He was described as being 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a round face, fair complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair.
