James Nevell (Nev) Lynch (1919-1976) postal worker and trade union official 

Birth: 27 March 1919 at Mudgee, New South Wales, son of native-born parents Christopher John Lynch (1889-1950) and Hilda Josephine, née Donoghue (1887-1966).  Marriage: 1958 at Earlwood, NSW, to Carmel Ann Quoyle (1926-2010), stenographer. They had one daughter and three sons. Death: 15 June 1976 at Campsie, NSW. Religion: Catholic. 

  • Federal Executive member, Amalgamated Postal Workers’ Union of Australia. Delegate to Annual Conference, secretary of the NSW branch from 1954 to 1961.
  • Leading role in opposition to the adverse Lines Staff reorganisation proposals of late 1950s which prevented its implementation.
  • Grouper who accused other union officials of being Communists resulting in 1957 in a letter of apology to them being published in the union’s newsletter.
  • Internal faction fighting brought about his removal from office, a good deal of this being associated with his support for Frank Waters when Frank was elected general president in 1961.
  • Cause of death: coronary occlusion, previous coronary occlusion 1963.
