John Lewis was a marine in the 18th (Plymouth) Company when he arrived at Sydney aboard the Alexander in January 1788 as part of the First Fleet. He served in Captain Watkin Tench's company at Port Jackson and worked as an 'ordinary carpenter' between September 1788 and December 1789.
Lewis returned to England on the Gorgon in December 1791. He may have joined the New South Wales Corps and returned. A man with this name received a 50 acre grant at Mulgrave Place with three others, on 1 May 1797; he was listed as a late marine.
