James Kirby arrived as a marine on the Alexander, a convict transport in the First Fleet. In March 1790 he was transferred to Norfolk Island. In 24 February 1792 he was granted 60 acres of land on the Island but in September that year was transferred back to Sydney. On 24 July 1798 he was finally discharged from military service and in October the following year was granted 200 acres of land at Mulgrave Place.
James Kirby appears to have had a long term relationship with Mary Bond, a Second Fleet convict on the Neptune. Their son James Victor Kirby was born 6 May 1793 and baptised on 16 August the same year at St Philip's Church, Sydney.
