HAROLD SINGLETON KELF, the son of Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Ann Jeanette Kelf, was born on 10th June, 1885, at Singleton, New South Wales, and was educated first at the Superior Public School, and afterwards at the Grammar School, Singleton. He joined the Bank’s service at Maitland, New South Wales, on 6th December, 1901, and was transferred in March, 1903, to Singleton, where in July he was appointed ledger-keeper. In December, 1906, he was transferred to Dubbo; in September, 1909, to Bungendore, as accountant; and in February, 1911, to Coonamble as teller.
He enlisted on 3rd October, 1916, at Coonamble, and before leaving Australia with the 9th Reinforcements of the 54th Battalion, he was appointed acting-sergeant, reverting to the ranks on joining his battalion in France on 24th September, 1917. Harold Kelf served at Passchendaele, Wytchaete, and on various sectors of the Somme front. He was promoted to sergeant in November, 1918, and returned to Australia in August, 1919.
