FRANK GLASS JOHNSTONE was born at Armidale, New South Wales, on 1st June, 1883, the son of the Rev. Dr. Johnstone and Mrs. Eliza Johnstone. He was educated at the Armidale School, Armidale, and joined the Bank’s service a t the branch in that town on 11th January, 1901. In January, 1905, he was appointed ledger-keeper and in the following June promoted to teller. In May, 1907, he was transferred to Emmaville as accountant; in September, 1909, to Uralla; in February, 1912, to Gunnedah; and in November, 1914, to Moree.
Enlisting as a private in the 33rd Battalion of the A.I.F. on 15th March, 1916, Frank Johnstone served in France and Belgium from September, 1916, until the Armistice, and was promoted to lieutenant. He returned to Australia in February, 1919.
