RANK H U G H JOHNSON was born on 25th January, 1893, at Charters Towers, Queensland, the son of Mr. Fred. Johnson, Mayor of that township, and Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Johnson. He was educated at the Townsville Grammar School and entered the Bank’s service at Charters Towers on 26th February, 1913, being transferred in the following April to Cairns.
Frank Johnson enlisted in July, 1915, as a private in the 15th Battalion, A.I.F. He rendered a good deal of service at the Front in France and was promoted to sergeant. Then he was sent to the Officers’ Training Corps at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was appointed second-lieutenant on returning to the Front. He was promoted to lieutenant on the field. Being severely wounded, Lieut. Johnson was ordered to return to Australia, but he asked to be allowed to remain until he was fit for service again and his request was granted.
