
LESLIE HERBERT IRWIN was born on 1st May, 1898, at Wickham, New South Wales, the son of Mr. George Henry Irwin and Mrs. Amelia Irwin. He was educated at the Wickham Public School and entered the service of the Bank on 17th September, 1914, at Newcastle West. Enlisting in the A.I.F. in March, 1916, Leslie Herbert Irwin sailed from Australia on 1st May, as sergeant in the 35th Battalion. On arrival in England he entered the Officers’ Training School, but went to France with his Battalion in December, 1916. He was wounded at Armentieres on 14th January, 1917, and was recommended for promotion to lieutenant. After some months in hospital, Leslie Irwin was transferred to the Flying Corps and went into training at Oxford University. He was attached to the aerodrome at Amberley as flight-lieutenant in the Australian Flying Corps when the Armistice was signed.
