Samuel (Sammy) Hampson (1874-1964) engineer and trade union official 

Birth: 20 February 1874 at Gorton, Manchester, England, son of Joseph Hampson (1851-c.1889), fitter, and Mary Ellen, née Jones (1852-c1903). Marriage: 1904 at Albert Park, Victoria, to Rose Dudley (1878-1954), born at St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands. They had two sons. Death: 17 July 1964 at North Coburg, Victoria. 

  • Apprentice in Manchester, England and joined Longsight Branch (or Gorton Branch) of union in 1893.
  • Immigrated to Australia in 1901 (or 1902). Worked in Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and settled in Melbourne.
  • Foundation member of Engineers and Brassworkers Skilled Wages Board in 1911. Secretary, Launceston branch of the Amalgamated Engineering Union in 1904. Organiser for Victoria and Tasmania from 1913 to 1918.
  • From about 1918 worked as assessor for the Repatriation Commission in which the position ensured that returned soldier trainees were given skilled work. The Government paid a specified part of the trade wage and the employers paid the remainder which increased with increases in the level of skill. Worked in this capacity up until the end of the scheme.
  • Awarded the Union’s VC (the Award of Merit). Secretary, Melbourne 2nd branch and president of Melbourne district committee about 1936.
  • Superannuated in 1936.
  • Cause of death: congestive cardiac failure and arteriosclerosis.
