NOEL WILLIAM HOWARD GALE was a native of Goulburn, N.S.W., where he was born on the 29th January, 1895; his parents being Mr. William Gale and Mrs. Blanche Gale. He was educated at King’s College, Goulburn.
He entered the service of the Bank on 21 st November, 1911, and was first engaged at the Bathurst Street (Sydney) Branch. A month later he was transferred to the Southern Branch, Sydney. On 20th March, 1912, he was sent to Wollongong, and on 1st June, 1914, to Newcastle West, N.S.W.
Soon after the outbreak of war he enlisted as a private in the A.I.F. at Newcastle, and was a member of the 2nd Battalion, which was part of the first contingent to sail from Australia for Egypt. Noel Gale was on the S.S. “Suffolk.”
He was promoted to lance-corporal, and took part in the Landing at Gallipoli on 25th April, 1915. He reached the shore and was fighting in a trench when struck by a Turkish bullet which killed him. almost instantly. According to a comrade who was alongside him in the trench, Noel Gale was well liked in the company.
