Moreton Cedric Berkeley Fitzhardinge was born in Dubbo, New South Wales, on 25th July, 1890. He is the son of the late Mr. C. H. Fitzhardinge, Solicitor, and Mrs. Fitzhardinge. He was educated at Dubbo Grammar School, and joined the service of the Bank at that town on 13th August, 1907. His subsequent transfers were to Scone, 1908; Maitland, in 1910; Collarenebri, in 1913; Trangie, in 1914; and Moree, in 1915.
He enlisted on 26th April, 1916, and embarked on 25th October in the same year. He proceeded to France, and in May, 1917, was wounded at Bullecourt while defending one of the Hindenburg Support Trenches against a counter-attack.
On 26th September, in the same year, he was wounded again at Polygon Wood. He eventually reached Australia and received his discharge on 2nd May, 1919.
