Joseph Feutrill was born on 25 October 1794 (and baptised on 25 December 1794 at St Philip's Church, Sydney), the son of Ann Short and Theophilus Feutrill. He joined the New South Wales Corps in 1802, aged 8, as a drummer boy. He moved to Port Dalrymple, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), with his family in 1804 and in 1810 transferred to the 73rd Regiment when the NSW Corps was recalled to England.
Joseph and his father were marked on regimental records as deserters in 1814 but returned to active duties soon after. Around 1815 they sailed for Sydney where they remained until 1818 when they were sent to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to join their regiment. Joseph died in Ceylon on 1 November 1818.
