REGINALD GIBSON FAITHFULL was born on 4th October, 1889, at Sydney, New South Wales, the son of Dr. Robert Lionel Faithfull (a Director of the Bank of New South Wales), and Mrs. Jessie Alice Faithfull. He was educated at King’s College, Goulburn.

He left Sydney for England in March, 1915, and enlisted in the following June. He received a commission as second-lieutenant in the 14th Reserve Cavalry and was attached to the Machine Gun Squadron. He was promoted to lieutenant in November, 1917.

Lieutenant Reginald Faithfull was awarded the Military Cross, and was also mentioned in despatches for distinguished service.
