In 1856 Charles Fairs was agent in Wollongong for the steamship Illawarra. In that same year he suggested to the Trustees of the Savings Bank of New South Wales that they could open a branch in Wollongong and appoint him the branch's accountant. He continued as the Wollongong bank's accountant until shortly before his death in 1871.
