GARNET SPURGEON COTTEE, the son of Mr. George F. Cottee and Mrs. Maggie Cottee, was born at Lismore, New South Wales, on 7th August, 1893. He was educated at the Lismore District School and the Fort Street Model School.

He entered the Bank’s service at Lismore on 6th May, 1911, and was transferred in the following year to Grafton, and to Guyra in May, 1915. He enlisted in August of the following year, and continued in the army until eight months after the Armistice. On the strength of his bank experience he had been promoted to the rank of pay sergeant.
