John Clayton was a marine in the 29th (Portsmouth) Company when he arrived at Sydney aboard the Scarborough in January 1788 as part of the First Fleet. He served in Captain James Meredith Company at Port Jackson. He was court martialled on 10 March 1788 and received 150 lashes on 12 March.
Clayton was sent to Norfolk Island on the Supply in 1790. It is likely that he returned to England on the Atlantic in December 1792.
