Ar t h u r No e l Rus selle Blay n ey was born at St. Kilda, Victoria, on 21st May, 1898. He was the son of Mr. Oliver Blayney and Mrs. Blanche Maud Blayney, and was educated at the Brighton Grammar School and the Church of England Grammar School, Ballarat.

He joined the service of the Bank on 12th April, 1915, at Flinders Street West, and on 12th April, 1916, was transferred to Richmond, Victoria.

In May, 1916, he enlisted at the age of eighteen, and embarked with the 6th Reinforcements of the 58th Battalion on the “Nestor,” his number being 2745.

He was promoted to the rank of lance-sergeant in August, 1916, and was killed in action by shell fire on 26th September, 1917, while defending the line at Polygon Wood, near Ypres.
