Laurence Fogarty (Laurie) Baldwin (1920 -1985) factory hand, miner, trade union leader

Birth: 1920, Dorrigo, New South Wales. Youngest son of Joseph Laurence Baldwin (1888-1960), farmer, later labourer, and his wife Rose Elizabeth, née Charlesworth. Marriage: 27 July 1947 at Thirroul, NSW, to Mary Winifred Crinnion. They had two children. Death: 11 October 1985, Wollongong, NSW. Religion: Catholic.

In 1948, encouraged the formation of a branch of the Food Preservers’ Union at Streets Ice-cream Works, Corrimal, near Wollongong; created closed shop.
May 1950, took job at Open Hearth, Port Kembla steelworks and joined the FIA [Federated Ironworkers’ Association]. 1951 elected union organiser. National councillor and National Trustee of FIA.
From 1952 secretary of Corrimal branch, Australian Labor Party.
Formerly played first grade cricket with Corrimal.
