First learnt carpentry and joinery trade as a CRTS trainee. Served apprenticeship with Department of Government Transport; successfully completed 5 years training course and obtained his Lower Course and Building Construction Certificates at St George Technical College, Sydney. Active unionist attending district meetings; job representative for various jobs in the Department of Government Transport. Foundation member of reconstituted Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners of Australia (ASC&J), NSW Branch (Grouper union) in 1952; elected to first Committee of Management; organiser in both city and country areas for 20 years; Vice-President, ASC&J, NSW Branch, and State President for 9 years; Secretary, 1963-c.1973; Officer of Union's Federal Executive for 8 years and National President; held position of Trustee. Secretary, Federal and State Coopers' Union. Delegate to ACTU Congress; delegate to NSW Labor Council and the Building Trades Group within the NSW Labor Council. Member of the ALP from 1935 (or 1933?), Langlea (Allawah) branch; held all branch and electorate council positions over time; member of ALP executive; delegate to ALP Annual Conference NSW. 1991, appointed Life Member ALP, NSW Branch being nominated by Penshurst Branch, Gary Punch MP. Member of Apprenticeship Council and of Licensing of Builders' Advisory Committee. Delegate to Combined Rail and Transport Committee; delegate to Workers' Education Association. Served in RAAF in Canada and Northern Australia. Active in St George sporting and social clubs; Played 1st Grade Rugby Union.
