Anderson, Andrew

Andrew Anderson, jnr. Birth? Son of Andrew Anderson, Scottish coalminer, socialist, union activist & immigrant. Death ?

Arrived Howard, Maryborough district, Queensland, with family in 1883, where father was associated with bid to form miners’ union in early 1890s. Well-educated, holding engineering qualifications, but interrupted professional career to become miner in order to support family. With brother, Gus, and D. V. Anderson played leading role in abortive strike to establish union at Howard and Burrum collieries in 1907. An ardent socialist, he was dubbed ‘an imported agitator’ and clashed publicly with William Rankin, managing director of Howard mine, declaring ‘I glory in doing anything I can for socialism’. After strike defeat, transferred to Brisbane with family, where, with brother, became prominent in the Social Democratic Vanguard. He was an associate of William and Ernie Lane and H. E. Boote.

E. Ross, 1970.
