Elijah Upjohn (1822–1885)

Elijah Upjohn, a labourer, was sentenced to seven years transportation for breaking into a house and stealing shoes. He arrived in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1839 aboard the Marquis of Hastings. He had two prior convictions — (1) once for stealing trousers for which he had been flogged (2) another theft for which he was flogged. he had also been punished while on the hulk, Leviathan.

According to the ship's indent he was 6 feet ½ inch (184 cms) tall, with brown hair and hazel eyes. The ship's surgeon described his conduct on board as 'orderly'. He was placed on the sick list in April and July 1839 suffering from rheumatism and then scorbutus. In December 1839 he was given 24 lashes for gross neglect of duty. In February 1841 for neglect of duty and idleness he was given 10 months hard labour. In August 1841 for insolence and disorderly conduct he was given 3 days solitary confinement. In January 1842 for being absent without leave he received three months labour added to his service.

He was granted a ticket of leave in 1844.
