FREDERICK LEES ROWBOTHAM was born on 21st September, 1893, at Hurstville, near Sydney, the son of Mr. Thomas Lees Rowbotham and Mrs. Helen Rowbotham. He was educated at Fort Street High School, Sydney, and entered the service of the Bank at Bathurst Street Branch, Sydney on 25th May, 1910. He was transferred to Haymarket in August; to Waverley in April, 1913, as ledger-keeper; and to Suva, Fiji, in October, 1914.
Frederick Lees Rowbotham enlisted in the 30th Battalion, A.I.F., on 14th May, 1916, and went to France, where he served from 31 st December, 1916, fighting in the big advance from Bapaume in March, 1917, onwards, also at Polygon Wood, Passchendaele, Messines and Hamel. He was promoted to corporal on 28th January, 1918, and took part in the Allies’ big offensive from 8th August until the Armistice.
