ALAN SEYMOUR HARMAN was born at Adelaide, South Australia, on 18th November, 1896, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Harman. He was educated at Muirden College, Adelaide. He joined the service of the Bank at Adelaide on 16th September, 1914, and was transferred to Mount Gambier, South Australia, as assistant, on 23rd May, 1916.

Alan Harman enlisted on 22nd November, 1917, and left Australia as a member of the Army Service Corps in March, 1918. He was promoted to acting sergeant in the following August, and received his discharge in October, 1919.
