Kathleen Harris Anderson née Hough (1921-1996)

Born: 19 May 1921, Canowindra, New South Wales. Daughter of Tom Hough, carpenter and unionist. Married: Keith William Anderson in 1946. They had one son. Died: 19 September 1996 at Penrith, Sydney, New South Wales.

  • Educated at Canowindra Central School and Sydney Girls High School.
  • 1953, joined ALP having previously been member of ALP Younger Set.
  • Active in ALP, Waverley, Paddington, Bondi at branch, SEC and FEC level.
  • Federal President, Labor Women, 1965-67.
  • NSW Member of Legislative Council, 1973-1981; Government Whip, 1976-1981.
  • Prominent in local government; 1963, elected to Sydney County Council; Chair, 1966-68 and 1981.
  • Chair, New South Wales Local Government Boundaries Commission.
  • Retired to Penrith district where prominent in local cultural activities – Q Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, and Lewers Bequest Art Gallery.
  • Appointed a Member of the Order of Australia, 1982.
  • Matriarch of New South Wales ALP right.
  • 'An old fashioned country girl devoted to her family, the church and the South Sydney Rugby League Football Club'.
